North Sumatra, August 24, 2026 – PT Pupuk Indonesia (Persero) has successfully increased rice productivity in Lumban Toruan Village, Lae Parira District, Dairi Regency, North Sumatra, to 12.3 tons per hectare, doubling the previous productivity level of 6 tons per hectare.

The increase was achieved through a demonstration plot (demplot) established by Pupuk Indonesia in collaboration with the local government through the Dairi Regency Agriculture, Food Security, and Fisheries Office (DKPPP).

Assistant Officer for Sales Support at Pupuk Indonesia Regional 1, Hendra Sagita, said that the success of the demonstration plot is expected to help restore farmers’ confidence in cultivating their rice fields after a period of declining interest caused by a significant drop in harvest yields.

Hendra explained that the 12.3 tons per hectare productivity figure was obtained through a transparent measurement process using crop sampling (ubinan), jointly conducted by Pupuk Indonesia, Field Agricultural Extension Officers (PPL), and local farmers. This collaborative process ensured that the harvest results could be measured objectively.

He further explained that the increase in productivity was supported by proper land preparation, measured and balanced fertilization practices, as well as intensive assistance provided by Pupuk Indonesia throughout the planting season.

“The success of the demonstration plot is expected to encourage farmers in Dairi Regency to optimize their rice fields. With increased productivity and the implementation of proper cultivation practices, efforts to restore Dairi’s position as one of North Sumatra’s food-producing regions can be realized gradually,” he added.

The increase in rice productivity also received appreciation from Sukaedah Angkat, Head of Division at the Dairi Regency Agriculture Office (DKPP). According to Sukaedah, the results of the demonstration plot demonstrate that proper land management and fertilization can significantly increase productivity.

She also emphasized that improving soil conditions is an important factor before farmers begin the planting season. Therefore, she encouraged farmers to use organic fertilizer and agricultural lime.

“This step is important to improve soil pH so that nutrient absorption can take place optimally. By implementing this approach, we are optimistic that it can contribute to sustainable national food self-sufficiency,” said Sukaedah.
